OpenX Cursus en Master Class op 3 juni aanstaande

Beste [firstname],

Op donderdag 3 juni 2010 organiseer ik op dezelfde dag zowel een cursus �Werken met OpenX� als een OpenX Master Class. Dit alles vindt plaats in Amsterdam. Misschien vind je het interessant om aan een of beide dagdelen deel te nemen.

Cursus �Werken met OpenX�
Deze cursus is bedoeld voor mensen die de OpenX software willen gaan gebruiken voor het beheer van advertenties op ��n of meerdere websites. Het niveau is afgestemd op mensen die geen kennis of ervaring hebben met OpenX, of die hun kennis over OpenX willen opfrissen.

OpenX Master Class
Deze master class is bedoeld voor ervaren gebruikers van de OpenX software die hun kennis willen vergroten en extra toepassingsmogelijkheden willen ontdekken. Aan de hand van de vragen en onderwerpen die de deelnemers zelf aandragen wordt het programma voor de master class samengesteld.

OpenX Ad Server v2.8.3 Released (security fix)

Hello [firstname],

Today, OpenX.org have released an emergency fix release to the OpenX Ad Server. Version 2.8.3 fixes an severe problem that has been discovered yesterday, which enables anyone to log in as an administrator. I've published a quick note about this security issue on my blog.

I understand that this is a very busy time of the year, especially with the long holiday weekend approaching. But this is a very serious security issue and I strongly recommend that you take action today. The best approach would be to upgrade to OpenX version 2.8.3 right now.

If you are running OpenX version 2.8.2, there is a quick fix. You can remove the 'install.php' file that is located in the 'www/admin' folder of your OpenX system. This is only a temporary solution, however, and you should plan to upgrade to version 2.8.3 as soon as possible.

Another temporary fix would be to add an extra layer of protection to your 'www/admin' folder. Depending on the type of web server software, your webmaster or system administrator should be able to create an additional login for this folder.

If you use OpenX Community Hosted (adserver.openx.org) then the security fix has most likely been implemented by OpenX.org already.

Please note that I won't be able to assist all my clients today. There are simply too many of you and only a few hours of day light left. However, feel free to reply to this e-mail if you have any questions, and I will do my best to respond as quickly as possible.

OpenX Ad Server v2.8.3 Released (security fix)

Hello [firstname],

Today, OpenX.org have released an emergency fix release to the OpenX Ad Server. Version 2.8.3 fixes an severe problem that has been discovered yesterday, which enables anyone to log in as an administrator. I've published a quick note about this security issue on my blog.

Obviously, this is a very serious issue and that's why I've decided to take action right away instead of informing you first and waiting for your approval. Since you are on my "upgrade support" list, I've implemented the quick fix that was recommended by OpenX. I've logged in on your server and deleted one file that is normally used for installation only, effectively removing the software code that seems to have been singled out by attackers.

This is only a temporary solution, the real solutions is to upgrade to version 2.8.3 as soon as possible. However, with the holidays approaching, I didn't want to wait until next week. I will be contacting you shortly to discuss and plan the upgrade to version 2.8.3.

I hope and trust that you are in agreement with my decision to act straight away. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns related to this issue.

Upgrading your OpenX Ad Server to version 2.8.2

I'm planning to start working on these upgrades as of tomorrow, Monday October 26. It may take a few days before I get to yours, because the list of upgrade projects has grown pretty long.

I will contact you separately, for instance to let you know when I'm about to start working on the upgrade and when I've completed it. There may also be specifics about your installation that I know about and will want to coordinate with you first.

If you feel that upgrading is not (yet) desirable in your case, please let me know, so I can make sure that I'm not interfering with other projects.

OpenX Ad Server v2.8.2 announced

I've just posted a new article on my site, about the upcoming release of OpenX Ad Server v2.8.2.

On October 12, OpenX have announced the imminent release of version 2.8.2 of the OpenX Ad Server. It will be available for users of OpenX Hosted initially, as of Tuesday October 13. The download package will be released a few days later. The news was announced on the OpenX blog, which also contains more detailed information about the new enhancements, improvement and fixes.

This is the first major update to the OpenX Ad Server software since late May 2009, and the improvements in this release focus on improving accurate delivery of contract campaigns, avoiding serving blank zones when using companion positioning and fixing a number of security issues.

Upgrading to OpenX 2.8

Hello [firstname],

You have asked me to be part of my list of clients that I keep informed about any OpenX upgrades that are relevant to your situation. This e-mail is about the upgrade to OpenX version 2.8.

I have upgraded my own OpenX to version 2.8 a number of weeks ago. And I have also done a number of other upgrades and new installations. The most recent release has been behaving very well for me and other users. Of course, as with any software, there are always a few little things and it is possible that there are bugs as well. However, I am now confident that upgrading is a smart move in your situation.

In addition to 'staying up to date', there is a major advantage in this new release. Because the new software stores the 'raw statistics' in another, more efficient way, there is less stress on the server and consequently the ad server and the website(s) will become faster. It's hard to predict how much faster, because every situation is different.

The other side of the same coin is that the user interface has been changed significantly. Even though all the concepts of OpenX have stayed the same, it will take a little bit of time to get used to the changed look and feel of the system. At some point in time in the future, upgrading will not be avoidable, so I think it's better to bite the bullet now and move forward.

I'm planning to start working on these upgrades as of tomorrow, Tuesday July 28. It may take a few days before I get to your server, because the list of upgrades has become quiet long.

I will contact you separately, for instance to let you know when I'm about to start on the work and when I've completed the upgrade. There may also be specifics about your installation that I know about and will want to coordinate first.

OpenX version 2.6.5 released - upgrade recommended

Hello [firstname],

You asked me be part of a list of my clients that I keep informed about any OpenX upgrades that are relevant for your situation. This e-mail is about two releases that have come out recently, version 2.6.5 and version 2.8.

OpenX Ad Server v2.8
Last week, OpenX have released their brand new version 2.8 of the OpenX Ad Server. I wrote about on my website.

Personally, I feel it's not a good move to upgrade to OpenX v2.8 at this time. The software has basically been rewritten from the ground up, and although there has been an extensive alpha and beta testing period, the v2.8.0 release does have some issues that need fixing before it can be used for live websites.

OpenX version 2.6.5
At about the same time, however, OpenX 2.6.5 was also released, an upgrade to the version that you are using right now. It has some 30 bug fixes and a patch for a minor security issue that was discovered recently. I do think it's prudent to upgrade to OpenX 2.6.5 as soon as possible. I wrote about OpenX v2.6.5 on my site too.

In short:
- I recommend not upgrading to OpenX 2.8 yet
- I do recommend upgrading to OpenX 2.6.5

Since you asked me to keep you informed about new releases and perform these upgrades, I am planning to work on upgrading your system starting Thursday, April 9. Of course, if for any reason you prefer not to upgrade to version 2.6.5 at this time, just let me know!

In closing:

OpenX security issue and resolution (v2.4.8/v2.6.1)

Dear [firstname],

I'm writing to you to inform you about a fix for a security issue in OpenX 2.4.8 and OpenX 2.6.1.

Security Issue Reported
Just before the weekend, a security problem was found in the OpenX software. The OpenX development team have created and tested a fix for this issue and have released it in the form of a patch. They are planning to release a full upgrade of version 2.4 and version 2.6 on Monday. It is recommended that you apply this patch or upgrade as soon as possible to make sure you're OpenX ad server is not compromised. More information about applying the patch below.

Security Patch Available
The OpenX developers have release a quick fix for the security problem in the form of a patch. Basically, it's as easy as replacing the files in the 'www/delivery' folder of OpenX with a new set of files. If you have access to your system via FTP and know how to operate an FTP program, you'll probably be able to complete the patch in less than 5 minutes.

Please note that this patch is for OpenX 2.4.8 and OpenX 2.6.1 only. If you have an older version, you'll have to go through the full procedure to upgrade to OpenX 2.4.9 or OpenX 2.6.2, scheduled to be released on Monday, October 6.
